Pistol Bunch TE

Playbook: New Orleans Saints

Play: HB Counter

Setup: None Required

Reads:

  1. Read the defensive end and either cut it up or break to the outside

Setup:

  1. Block the running back to take away the play action

  2. The second read is the X/Square receiver on the curl
  3. The third read is the flat route, the B/O receiver

Overview: This play is phenomenal in a short yardage situation. Anything like a 3rd and 3 or even 4th and 2 this is a great go to play. It is very difficult to guard the different routes in this play.

Formation: Pistol Bunch TE

Play: Stick

Setup:

Reads:

  1. The first is the X/Square receiver if there is press coverage

Formation: Pistol Bunch TE

Play: HB Zone

Setup: None Required

Reads:

  1. Follow your blocking and hit a hole for a nice gain

Overview: This play is very effective to run if your opponent really starts committing to the counter. Both runs are in this same formation. What makes these runs so difficult to stop is that to your opponent both look exactly the same pre snap.

Are some of these plays out of date due to the new patch. One example FK screen the drag doesn’t seem to get the speed burst that you show. Also one of your staples is the outside runs do you still feel like these are effective plays?

Reply to  Madden School

Like you guys did last year, can you make a note of plays affected by madden patches?

By the way, you guys can’t put out enough Pistol plays in my opinion.

The ability to switch directions pre-snap for the run w/o flipping plays is tremendous. Running from the Gun can be somewhat obvious against a good defensive player. Effective passing from Pistol, combined with flexible running plays make this formation a lot of fun. Singleback too.
