Playbook: Minnesota Vikings

Formation: 46 Normal

Play: Cover 3 (Left Side Heat)

Setup:

  1. Base Align
  2. Shift your defensive line to the right
  3. Crash your defensive line down
  4. Put your DE on the right side of the screen into a zone
  5. Blitz your OLB on the left side of the screen and move him up and out toward the sideline until his angle changes

Overview: This is a 4 man rush.  The heat isn’t automatic but you usually get a free rusher 50% of the time or so.

Play: Cover 3 (Right Side Heat)

Setup:

  1. Base Align
  2. Shift your defensive line to the left
  3. Crash your defensive line down
  4. Put your DE on the left side of the screen into a zone
  5. Blitz your SS on the right side of the screen and move him up and out toward the sideline until his angle changes

Overview: This is a similar play to the last coverage but with pressure from the right side.

Formation: 46 Normal

Play: Cover 2 Invert

Setup:

  1. Base Align
  2. Shift your defensive line to the right
  3. Crash your defensive line down
  4. Blitz your OLB on the right side of the screen
  5. QB Contain

Overview: You will want to user control your linebacker on the QB contain and manually pull him off the QB contain after he takes a step toward the left tackle.  It is important that you do the steps for this setup in order otherwise the play may not work.

Formation: 46 Normal

Play: Fire Zone 3

Setup:

  1. Base Align
  2. Show Blitz
  3. Crash your defensive line down
  4. Blitz your OLB on the right side of the screen
  5. (Optional) Move the OLB on the right side of the screen out towards the sideline until his angle changes
  6. Adjust the zones behind it the way you want

Overview: This play usually brings either double edge heat or DT pressure through the A-Gap.

Formation: 46 Normal

Play: Cover 3 (Run Stopper)

Setup:

  1. Base Align
  2. Spread your linebackers
  3. Move your cornerbacks back a little and inside
  4. Control the free safety and bring him a little closer to the line of scrimmage

Overview: This play does a good job of slowing down most running plays if you are good at user controlling your safety.  You have 9 defenders in the box.

I can’t get the 46 cover 2 invert to work! I’m doing everything it says!
