In this week’s Madden School Film Room, we are going over 4 plays found in the Miami Offensive playbook that absolutely destroy cover 3 defenses.

Playbook: Miami Dolphins
Formation: Gun Doubles
Play: Fade HB Wheel
Setup:
- Hot route your X/square receiver to either a drag route or a smoke screen
- Put your tight end on a streak route
- Put your B/circle receiver on a slant route
- (Optional) Block your running back
Reads:
- Your main read on this play is the Y/triangle receiver deep against a cover 3.
- If he is covered, look to the slant route as a check down option
Overview: This play destroys Cover 3 defenses when your opponent isn’t using zone drops or protect the sticks. You’ll want your fastest receiver in the slot (y/triangle).
Playbook: Miami Dolphins
Formation: Gun Empty Base Flex
Play: Middle Hi Lo
Setup:
- Put your X/square running back on a drag route (or smoke screen)
- Put your tight end on a drag route
- Smart route your RB/R1 receiver
Reads:
- The main read on this play is the Y/triangle receiver deep against cover 3
- If he is covered, look to the tight end on the drag or the RB/R1 receiver on the skinny post
Overview: This play destroys both cover 3 and cover 1 defenses. Check out our breakdown for Cover 1 here.
Playbook: Miami Dolphins
Formation: Gun Split Close Miami
Play: Y Out
Setup:
- Motion your tight end to the right and put him on a smoke screen hot route
Reads:
- Your primary read on this play against cover 3 is the B/circle receiver deep. Lead pass to the sideline.
Overview: As long as your opponent is in a standard cover 3 defense, this play should get open deep.
Playbook: Miami Dolphins
Formation: Gun Empty Ace Miami
Play: Empty Stick Nod
Setup:
- Motion your Y/triangle receiver to the right
- Put your X/square receiver on a smoke screen hot route
Reads:
- Your primary read on this play against cover 3 defenses, is the Y/triangle receiver deep. Lead pass to the sideline
Overview: Remember to have your fastest wide receiver in the Y/triangle position.
